Cup of Coffee Project

The second project of second year was the 'Cup of Coffee' project. This consisted of creating 2 animated sequences - one with a person in a good mood, who drinks a bad cup of coffee, and another of a person who is in a bad mood, who drinks a good cup of coffee. The aim of the project was to convey the change between the two moods with the changing factor in the story being the coffee both times.

I began with some mind-mapping, and decided initially to go for two ideas which would merge together at one point in the story.

I then went out and drew different people at a couple of coffee shops around the city. I also created two basic story boards and started to look at character design. I kept all my ideas very basic with not too much detail so that they would be easy to change and add to as I went through the process of the project.

Going out and drawing real people really helped me figure out different poses and possible scenarios which I could include in my project. I then looked at different emotions and how facial features can affect the overall emotion of the character. I focused on 'Roger' from '101 Dalmatians' to do this.

After this, I decided to look at designing a set. Once I had done the outside of the cafe setting, I realised I had put far too much detail into the design, and that I wouldn't be able to keep this up for the whole animation.

I settled on a much simpler design and then moved onto character design.

I did some basic designs and then created a rendered image of my character. The male character ended up not being used as I did not use the idea for the film he was in. I also looked into different colours I could use in each of their designs and I looked at emotions for the female character. I am happy with the final design of the female character and I used it for my film.

For my second film I used a similar idea of the male character but a more simple design. He has a tie and blue trousers, and all his facial features are very round and simple to animate.

I then created rough, and afterwards rendered, storyboards for each of my films. This was useful to work from when I was making the final films.

I then went on to make the final films.

This is the 'person in a bad mood drinks a good cup of coffee' film.

I am happy with the final outcome and think the simple look lets more focus be drawn on what actually happens in the film. The music is quiet throughout until the twist in the film, and then it becomes loud and jovial.

This is the 'person in a good mood drinks a bad cup of coffee' film.

I am happy with the final film, however I had planned to have more scenes in it, showing the character walking into the cafe and then see them waiting on their coffee. I would also like to have added sound to make it more enjoyable to the viewer.
